Principles of Learning

COMPETENCY-BASED APPROACH
-skills range from basic to advanced levels
-skills vary depending on the context in which they are used
-skills can be demonstrated to provide assessment of achievement
-skill evaluation provides a measure of program accountability

CONTEXTUALIZED LEARNING
-shifts focus from acquisition of skills and knowledge to active application of skills and knowledge in real-world situations
-recognizes skills and knowledge should be integrated into applicable, realistic situations and should be developed and practiced
-simulates actual work environment in which skill application occurs
-instruction includes workplace materials and is focused on reading, technology, communication and related skills as they apply to the work environment
-increases successful transfer of skills to intended workplace
-increases interest, motivation and satisfaction because it is immediately evident how the skills can be applied in everyday life

Principle: We must adapt to a flattening world
PC's allowed every individual to instantly become author of his/her own digital content and provided access to more digital content around the world. Anyone can collaborate on that content from anywhere.

This gave rise to the power to "go global" as individuals.

What is your "value add"?
"If you are an American you better be good at the touchy-feely service stuff, because anything that can be digitized can be outsourced to either the smartest or the cheapest producer, or both" (Friedman, 15).

Implications of a Flattening World:
Hierarchies are being challenged or transformed into more horizontal and collaborative structures, which requires a totally different set of skills.

"Information at your fingertips." (Bill Gates)

The demand for "all things digital" dramatically changes the next generation, who are growing up online rather than having to adjust to it.

Now employees (students) need to think about how they can use their own network(s), see and make connections to create a horizontal response system in order to optimize their intelligence and efficiency.

"Imagination is more important than knowledge."
~ Albert Einstein

"Imagination can't be just about reruns. It has to be about writing our own new script" (Friedman, 552).
