Practices:
We must teach our students to be educated consumers of the digital world/economy.
What is our "economic destiny"?
Bottom Line: "Work gets done where it can be done most effectively and efficiently" (Friedman, 21).
Common Practices:
OUTSOURCING ("sourcing") - send work outside the US - ex: America-India, Japan-China
E-tutoring Aeronautical engineering (Boeing) Fast food orders (McDonald's) Accounting & tax prep Design firms/blueprints Military strategy (US Predator - drone) Teleradiology (CAT scans/MRI) Animated television production (Higglytown Heroes) E-commerce (online billing/payments)
HOMESOURCING - keep jobs in the US - ex: JetBlue-Utah (reservations)
Preparation:
How we educate children is more important than how much. The following are suggested by Friedman as means to prepare students to shift from "command and control" to "connect and collaborate": 1. Learn how to learn (flexible and adaptable) "What you know today will be out of date sooner than you think" (302) 2. Passion and curiosity "With these tools at hand, you can take yourself farther than ever before" (303) 3. Need to like people - be good at managing and interacting with others 4. Develop right brain - forging relationships, tackling novel challenges, synthesizing the big picture (307)
Implications for Education:
Create threads, connect disciplines rather than departmentalize ("flattening of schools and universities") We need to examine trends rather than just look at "today's snapshot" (334)
THEN: lifetime employment guaranteed by company NOW: lifetime employability no longer a guarantee; employees need to become more adaptable through life-long learning
Schools need to create a context where anyone can come and achieve his/her potential and be validated.
"Education is a process, not a place" (Friedman, 376).
