Goodnight Mister Tom
Week One - Meeting Willie and Tom

Task One: Who are you?

After reading chapter one, think carefully about the two characters you have met: Tom Oakley and Willie Beech. Use Inspiration to create character webs for each, making sure that you note down what each character looks like, how they feel and how they act. Remember to include evidence from the text to support each of your points.

Here is an example for you:

Task Two: Speaking in tongues.

Firstly, find out what the word 'dialect' means.

Then, re-read chapter one. Find passages where Tom is speaking to Willie. Identify some phrases that Tom uses which show that he speaks with a specific dialect. Record them in your diary along with a translation into standard English.

Secondly, visit the Yorkshire Dialect website and find the poem 'Ar Billy.' Translate this poem into standard English and email it to your teacher.

Task Three: Evacuation!

In September 1939, the Government announced that a programme of evacuation from Britain's major cities would begin. It was not only children who were to be evacuated but also the elderly, the infirm and expectant mothers.

Your task is to use a range of historical sources including: photographs, documents, video footage and audio recordings to find out information about the evacuation. You should consider:

What the evacuated children wore,
What they took with them/carried,
Where they were evacuated to,
Where they were evacuated from,
How the evacuation was organised,
How the children and their families felt.

Present your information as a news-report written from the point of view of a young journalist witnessing the evacuation in a major city in 1939. You may include photographs or pictures you find useful. Don't forget to reference any materials taken from a website. Email your completed report to your teacher.
