|
Task One: Chamberlain Announces
In chapter five the residents of Little Weirwold gather together in the church to listen to Prime Minister Chamberlain's announcement on the 'wireless' radio. Read the chapter and think carefully about how each of the residents react to his message.
Then, listen to Chamberlain's speech for yourself. Imagine that you are the local news-reporter sitting in the church hearing these words for the first time. How do you feel?
Write a news report about the events of the day. Include interviews or quotes from the residents of Little Weirwold.
Consider:
How they feel, What worries they have?, What preparations they will have you make, Whether local men will be going to fight.
To help you structure your report, have a look at some real examples of news reports written at the time. You may include appropriate photographs but remember to reference where you found them.
After you have finished your report, email it to your teacher.
Task Two - Rationing
As the war progressed, supply ships carrying food and equipment across the Atlantic Ocean were caught up in the fighting as German U boats targeted British supplies. Consequently, many everyday foods and goods were in scarce supply. To ensure that everyone had a fair chance to buy food, the government introduced a system of rationing.
Your Task is to use the internet to investigate how rationing worked. Consider:
What goods were rationed, How much could each person expect to get, How was rationing controlled, If there any problems associated with rationing.
Present your findings as an information report, using appropriate images to illustrate your work.
Email your report to your teacher once it is finished.
Task Three: Dig for Victory!
With food supplies getting tighter all the time, the government launched one of its most memorable slogans of the time - Dig For Victory!
Your task is to find out what this slogan was about; what exactly was the government trying to persuade people to do?
Then, after looking at some of the posters used, design your own 'Dig for Victory' poster using a desk top publishing program. Make sure you include:
Persuasive images, A catchy Slogan, Information about the campaign.
When you have completed your poster, email it to your teacher.
