Goodnight Mister Tom
Week Two - Finding out about each other

Task One:

As you read chapters two and three, note down in your diary the names of all the people that Willie meets as he travels with Tom around Little Weirwold.

Then, choose two of these people and consider what they must have been thinking when they first saw Tom with Willie. Imagine that your two characters meet up in the village shop and have a conversation about what they had seen that day. Write down what they would say to each other. Consider:

What they would think of Willie,
What they would think of Tom,
Their attitude towards having evacuees in the village,
The impact the evacuees might have on the village.

To help you, visit the websites recording personal accounts written as people witnessed the arrival of evacuees in their villages and homes.

Once you have finished, email your conversation to your teacher.

Task Two - Persuading Parents.

Although war had been announced, to begin with nothing much seemed to be happening and people started to refer to the events in Europe as the 'Phoney War.' Many evacuees, homesick or unwanted by their billets, began to return to their homes; by January 1940, three out of four had returned to the danger of the cities.

Your task is to find out how the Government set about persuading parents to leave their children in the safety of the countryside. You will need to research the posters used at the time considering:

How the words chosen were persuasive,
How the images chosen were persuasive.

Then, using a desk top publishing or word processing program, you need to design your own poster aimed at the parents of evacuated children. Email your completed poster to your teacher.

You may include any appropriate images you find but remember to reference their source.

Task Three: Protecting your homes and family.

When Willie first meets Dr. and Mrs. Little they are busy digging trenches in their back garden to create an air-raid shelter. Although the government did provide some public shelters, people were encouraged to build one for themselves in their own homes.

Your task is to find out about these shelters. You should consider:

How they were made,
What they were made out of,
How protective they were,
What it was like to be inside one during an air raid.

You should present your findings as a report including any diagrams/pictures that are appropriate. Remember to reference any materials used from the internet.
